an illustrated talk on the work of scientists from Scripps, Caltech, and Indiana State who have been studying methane seeps that form hard carbonate rock off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica using submersibles during cruises in 2009 and 2010. Terry Rutkas, of the Pacific Conchological Club, will give an illustrated presentation on how humankind took its first step into the Pacific, 40,000 years ago. Rutkas says it will likely surprise the audience to learn why humans would not have progressed as far as they have without seashells. 63. "Rare Cowries of the World." David Waller will present around the world and ending in La Jolla, California, where he found his first cowrie. We will set anchor at a number of well known locations for shell collecting and show some photos of some rare cowries of the region. No voyage would be successful without a map, so we will explore the meaning of the word "rare," as it applies to these magnificent shells, before getting underway. 55. "Pteropods and Heteropods and the Danger of Ocean Acidification Due to Increasing Carbon Dioxide." Presenter Dr. Victoria Fabry, a biological oceanographer at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has been focusing her research on the sensitivity of calcareous organisms, such as the planktonic molluscan pteropods and heteropods, and marine ecosystems to elevated carbon dioxide and ocean acidification.

Presenter Wendy Enright received her Masters degree in Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and has been at the City of San Diego since 2001. She was first in the Ocean Operations field group and has been in the Taxonomy group since 2008. She will present her talk on deep-water mollusks, highlighted with slides of these creatures.13.
